Authorities in Nepal launched a rescue mission Monday for more than 2,000 tourists that have been stranded near Mount Everest for six days. Bad weather conditions forced the tourists to seek shelter in the village of Lukla, a popular starting point for Mt. Everest climbs. Hotels in the village were packed and food supplies began to run low last week because flights were grounded.
Weather conditions began to improve over the weekend and by Sunday planes were able to land in Lukla. About 500 tourists were taken to the capital of Kathmandu by Sunday night. A spokesman for the Nepal Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation told CNN the plan is to have the remaining 1,500 tourists in Kathmandu by Monday.
No other details were available.
