Anderson, SC – A tragic accident occurred late Friday night which resulted in the death of a 14 year old girl after the car she was traveling in was struck by an 18-wheeler carrying gas.
The wreck was in Pelzer and shutdown Highway 29 for several hours. The accident happened at the intersection of Highway 29 and Ballard Road.
According to witnesses, a Honda was traveling east on Ballard Road when the driver turned right onto Hwy 29 where they were struck by the 18 wheeler. The Honda, carrying 3 teenage girls spun around several times and went down an embankment.
Jaela Kelley, 14, was not wearing her seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. She was taken by helicopter to a Greenville area hospital where she died of her injuries.
The two other teenage girls, Haley Ragsdale, 17, and Codey Hendrey, 18, suffered non-life threatening injuries.
The impact of the accident separated the truck cab from the tanker which rolled over several times and spilt gas onto the highway. HazMat crews spent several hours cleaning up the roadway.
Investigators are working on determining the cause of the auto accident.
