An attack on a group of U.N. peacekeepers patrolling in the Darfur region of Sudan left one person dead and two others wounded. The UN-African Union mission in Darfur, also known as UNAMID, said the attack occurred Sunday near Nyala.
According to UNAMID, “unidentified armed persons” ambushed the patrol and opened fire. “As a result, one soldier was killed and two others were wounded. All the causalities were from Sierra Leone,” the mission said.
One suspect was apprehended by peacekeepers during a search of the area. He is now in the custody of Sudanese authorities.
UNAMID chief Ibrahim Gambari condemned the attack and called for justice. "I am deeply distressed by and in the strongest terms denounce all violence on our peacekeepers who work relentlessly to bring security and protection to the people of Darfur," he said. "Any attack on international peacekeepers is a war crime, and we will ensure that justice will be served.”
Last month, 3 peacekeepers were killed in an attack on a refugee camp in Darfur. A total of 34 U.N. peacekeepers have died since the mission in Darfur began in December 2007.
