A strong earthquake struck off the coast of Japan Tuesday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey announced. The 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck in the East China Sea at a depth of 138 miles. The epicenter was located about 136 miles northwest of Naha, Okinawa prefecture and 309 miles from Taipei, Taiwan.
Residents in Naha reported feeling minor shaking. There were no immediate reports of damages, injuries or deaths. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a tsunami.
Japan is one of the most seismically active countries in the world due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire. In March, a massive 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck northeast Japan and generated a tsunami. Nearly 20,000 people were left dead or missing.
