Ten children were killed Sunday when a hand grenade exploded at an orphanage in Myanmar’s Kachin State. Witnesses reported seeing two people on a motorcycle throw a package into the orphanage in Myitkyina. The package is believed to have contained a grenade.
A resident speaking anonymously to Reuters said the children were gathered for a study session when the explosion occurred. "A study group was taking place at the time of the bombing, that was why the number of casualties was high," the resident said.
The dead included 9 orphans and one other child. At least 27 people were wounded. It is unclear why the orphanage was targeted and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
