Mexican soldiers searching for drugs inside a tractor-trailer found 140 Central American migrants instead. The Defense Ministry, also known as SEDENA, said the truck was stopped at a highway checkpoint in the southern border state of Chiapas over the weekend. Soldiers became suspicious when the two drivers of the truck acted unusually nervous.
A search uncovered a hidden wall in the back of the trailer. SEDENA says 128 men and 12 women were hiding behind the wall. All of the migrants were from Guatemala. They were taken into custody and sent to a prosecutor’s office in Arriaga. The two Mexican drivers were detained.
Each year an estimated 500,000 illegal migrants attempt to travel across Mexico to reach the United States. The journey is dangerous as many organized crime groups forcibly recruit migrants or kill them.
