Eastern Turkey was hit by another powerful earthquake early Tuesday morning as authorities and residents struggle to recover from two previous tremors that have left 644 people dead.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the 5.2 magnitude earthquake hit 18 miles northwest of the city of Van at a depth of 6.2 miles. Turkey's Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute said the epicenter was located in the village of Mollakasim. Van officials say at least one building collapsed. There were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries.
Tuesday morning’s tremor comes 3 weeks after a powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit the same area, leaving 604 people dead and thousands of others homeless. A 5.6 magnitude earthquake hit last week and toppled three buildings in Van. At least forty people died in that tremor.
Many earthquake survivors are now living in the streets in freezing temperatures because their homes were destroyed or damaged. Protests have broken out over the government’s slow response in providing shelter and supplies to the victims.
