Apple CEO Steve Jobs Returns, Working Few Days A Week

Apple CEO Steve Jobs is back at the office a few days a week after spending almost six months on medical leave.

Jobs, 54, will work from home on days he doesn't work from Apple's Cupertino, California, headquarters, company spokesman Steve Dowling said Monday. Dowling did not say exactly when Jobs returned to the office.

Jobs’ work situation has been carefully watched by analysts and investors as he has been integral to the success of Apple. With his absence, consumer confidence in the Apple brand was not as strong.

Jobs is seen as the visionary behind Apple's popular iPod and the iPhone, which outlasted cellular telephones with its cutting-edge technology.

Jobs was diagnosed with a rare form of pancreatic cancer called an islet cell neuroendocrine tumor. He had surgery in 2004 and announced then that he was cured.

Along with his weight loss, his absence as the opening keynote speaker at the upcoming Macworld conference drew a lot of questions.

Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute in Memphis, Tennessee, said last week that Jobs had received a liver transplant. Medical experts who were not involved in Jobs' treatment have told The Associated Press that cancer cells not removed in the original surgery could have spread to Jobs' liver.

Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook took over the reigns in Jobs’ absence and the company was run very smoothly. Under Cook’s leadership, Apple continued to release well-received products, including updated laptops with lower entry-level prices, updated Mac software and a faster iPhone with many anticipated features. Apple sold more than a million of the new iPhone 3GS during its first three days on the market.

Shares of Apple stock slipped 47 cents to close Monday at $141.97.
