The Minnesota Timberwolves are still waiting on word from draftee Ricky Rubio as to what his plans for this upcoming season will be.
Rubio, the 18-year old Spanish point guard, was selected No. 5 by the Timberwolves in the 2009 NBA Draft last week. The next day, Rubio’s father said that Rubio may stay in
Rubio was expected to be a top three pick, going to either the Memphis Grizzlies or the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Sacramento Kings, who had the No. 4 pick, were also reportedly interested in Rubio. However, neither team selected him.
The New York Knicks were one of the teams that were very interested in him, but they were too low with the No. 8 pick. There were talks that the Knicks were trying to make a trade to move up in order to draft Rubio, but it did not happen on draft day.
Prior to the draft, Rubio embarked on an American tour to visit potential teams that he was interested in playing for if they drafted him.
With the sixth pick, the Timberwolves selected
Knicks GM Donnie Walsh expressed interest in making a trade for Rubio in the near future. The Houston Rockets have also expressed interest in Rubio, but, according to ESPN’s Chris Broussard, it appears that the Timberwolves expect a lopsided deal in order to part ways with Rubio.
