Venus Williams advanced to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon on Monday after Ana Ivanovic was forced to retire early in the second set. Williams was up 6-1, 1-0 when Ivanovic announced she would be unable to continue due to a thigh injury that had limited her mobility throughout the match.
Venus was able to control the match with a strong first serve in which she won 76 percent of the offerings that she put in play. In comparison Ivanovic managed to win just 48 percent of her first serves that were played and failed to gain a break in three opportunities.
Venus Williams has seven Grand Slam singles titles, five of them at Wimbledon and another two at the U.S. Open. The American has reached the finals at the Australian Open and the French Open but lost to her sister, Serena Williams, in both of those Grand Slam finals.
