The most dangerous alcoholic

Functioning alcoholics growing in number

Much has been said of those alcoholics who are obvious alcoholics.  But, perhaps one of the most difficult types of alcoholics are those who have been termed ‘high-functioning alcoholics’.

A high-functioning alcoholic is an individual who is able to carry on activities in life and exhibit few of the outward signs associated with alcoholism.  These individuals are able to hold down a job and cover up their alcoholism for most people.

“High functioning alcoholics seem just like you and me to most people,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside  Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center.  “They are very careful in the way they consume alcohol - often times they will drink in secrecy or, if in public, they will drink only to achieve their desired effect, stopping short of becoming a ‘sloppy drunk’.  These individuals may only drink expensive liquor, as an attempt to conceal their alcohol abuse.  In addition, these types of alcoholics are among the most dangerous to themselves because they can’t grasp the extent of their addiction, and their lives aren’t necessarily adversely affected by their alcohol consumption.  High functioning alcoholics can be among the most difficult to reach.”

While it’s estimated that nearly 14 million individuals within the United States battle alcohol addiction, almost 20 percent are classified as high-functioning alcoholics.

If you have a loved one who you suspect may be a high-functioning alcoholic, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center can help you sensitively and successfully approach them in a non-confrontational manner, enabling them to face their alcohol addiction with dignity.
