What is a 12-Step drug rehab program?
Originally developed for recovering alcoholics, AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) developed this set of guiding principles to help these individuals overcome their addictions, compulsions and other behavioral problems they may be suffering with. The original 12-Step drug rehab Program was initially published in 1939. However, there are other programs today that have now adapted their programs to the original 12-Step Program methods. These include:
- Cocaine Anonymous
- Co-Dependents Anonymous
- Debtors Anonymous
- Overeaters Anonymous
- Narcotics Anonymous
So as you can see, 12-Step Programs currently address a wide range of behavioral and substance abuse problems. Today there are over 200 fellowships (self-help organizations) that employ the 12-Step principles.
The 12-Step process
The key difference between the 12-Step Drug Rehab process and other rehab philosophies is the way in which it addresses the human structure. This is represented on the three basic levels of the human structure – mental, physical, and spiritual. Any time an individual is suffering with any substance addiction, the problems that arise usually manifest themselves on all three of these structural levels. But you also have to understand the elements of each dimension.
- Mentally – the obsession for repeating the addictive/compulsive behavior is a cognitive process that compels the individual to dive back into that behavior after brief periods of abstaining from the substance.
- Physically – this dimension is characterized by the body’s allergy-like reaction which results in the compulsive behavior (continuing to abuse the substance).
- Spiritually – the illness on this level is oftentimes called a “spiritual malady” and is considered to be self-centered in nature by all 12-Step drug rehab groups. This is purely a perspective and not a scientific explanation. By working the 12-Steps the individual is able to replace this self-centeredness.
