Two separate fires ripped through a nursing home in Sydney, Australia early Friday, leaving at least four elderly patients dead. At least 14 people suffered severe burns and were admitted to intensive care. Eighteen others were hospitalized with minor injuries.
Police officials say the fires started in two separate areas of the facility, sparking suspicion that the blazes were deliberately set. Fire Assistant Commissioner Jim Smith said homicide and arson detectives were called to the scene to investigate. Sniffer dogs will look for traces of gasoline once the ruins cool.
Fire Commissioner Greg Mullins said firefighters worked hard to remove the facility’s 88 residents from the building. "This is a firefighter's worst nightmare. Turning up to a nursing home with elderly people who can't get themselves out of harm's way,” he said.
About 20% of the nursing home was destroyed.
