Ambien is used to treat sleeping disorders and some brain disorders. It is one of over 20 different brand names for the prescription medication Zolpidem (generic name). It is fast-acting and a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic which typically takes effect in 15-20 minutes. Although it has not completely demonstrated that is effective for helping an individual sleep, the hypnotic effects of Ambien are extremely similar to those that you would experience with benzodiazepines. However, it is very distinct from benzodiazepines due to its molecular composition.
Is Ambien addictive?
Ambien not only builds up dependencies, it is highly habit forming. Physicians tend to over-prescribe the medication as it is such an easy or quick fix for insomnia. Examinations and research studies have revealed underlying problems with the individual (e.g. bi-polar disorder, depression, etc.). But because of its immediate effectiveness, this is rarely examined. When an individual abuses or overuses Ambien and then abruptly quits taking it, a condition known as rebound insomnia oftentimes results. Remember that Ambien is taken so the individual falls asleep. It is not meant to keep you asleep.
Forgetting what occurred prior to and after the drug was taken is a condition known as retrograde amnesia. This is another one of Ambien’s side effects when it is being abused. This is the primary reason that so many addiction treatment and recovery centers have developed drug rehab programs that target Ambien abuse. Unfortunately, many of these programs are offered at traditional addiction treatment and recovery facilities which do not treat the addiction properly. Many of these individual’s do not recover successfully from their dependence on the drug and relapse back into abusing it.
