Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore’s divorce announcement came as no surprise to those close to them, according to a friend of the couple. The insider tells People magazine Kutcher and Moore’s marriage “[had] been deteriorating for a long time” due to problems caused by their 15 year age difference and Kutcher’s alleged cheating.
Kutcher, 33, had apparently been ready for divorce for a while, but waited for Moore to file first. “He loved her but couldn't live with her,” the source says.
The insider says Moore was open to trying to save their 6 year marriage, but ultimately “couldn’t deal with the pain of his cheating.” Another friend says their age difference was also a big issue for Moore, 49. “If anyone was uncomfortable with the age difference, it was Demi, not Ashton. She drove him crazy after a while with questions and doubts,” the friend tells People.
Moore and Kutcher announced their divorce last Thursday. "As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life. This is a trying time for me and my family, and so I would ask for the same compassion and privacy that you would give to anyone going through a similar situation,” Moore said in a statement.
"I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi. Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail,” Kutcher added.
The announcement came a month after 22-year-old Sara Leal claimed to have had a one-night stand with Kutcher on September 24 – the Two and a Half Men star’s sixth wedding anniversary with Moore.
“We had sex twice. Everything felt natural. We were having a good time. One thing led to another. He was good but it wasn't weird or perverted or creepy. I was attracted to him, and he was attracted to me,” Leal told Britain’s Sun newspaper.
“The last thing I remember him saying was he did a good job," she said. "We woke up and I was wearing a robe. He opened it up and I was like, 'What are you doing?' He was like, 'Just checking. OK, I did good! You're really pretty.'”
