Author and Matchmaker Give You the Tools to Jump-Start Summer Romance

When Gloria MacDonald, President of Perfect Partners, The Personal Relationship Executive Search Firm, and Thelma Beam, Psychotherapist and Principal of Mind Meld Consulting Inc. wrote the book Laws of the Jungle: Dating for Women Over 40 they wanted to help women beat the odds and find the man of their dreams!  They have had a lot of fantastic feedback about the book and discussions always bring up even more questions about the science of attraction.

Thelma Beam explains how attraction works. “In humans, attraction is based on pattern recognition. During our early years, a pattern is hard-wired into our brains of what turns us on. This is based on early childhood experiences with our parents. Thereafter, we are attracted to people who fit this pattern. So, for instance, if you had a father who was emotionally unavailable or distant, you might create a pattern for a man who has the same characteristics. Or if you had to compete with your sister for your father’s attention, then you might form a pattern where you had to always be in a love triangle with another woman.” And, because the pattern is actually hard-wired, it is extremely difficult to change, even when your “type” just doesn’t work for you.

People are so ingrained with their “type” that they will often seek to replace the person they have lost with another one who is similar. Beam says she’ll never forget the client who, right after his divorce, brought a date to meet his family. The woman was a dead-ringer of his ex-wife. Or the client who wanted a man with “The Look”. All of her previous boyfriends had the identical beard, hair colour and body type.

So how do you stop being attracted to the wrong type of person? “It’s a process of evolution rather than revolution”, says MacDonald. The only way to break a pattern is to consciously do something differently. Women should pick a man who does not quite conform to their “type”, and see how that goes. Try dating men with different variations until you learn what does and doesn’t make you happy. In other words, if you have always picked the wrong kind of guy, try loving with your head instead of just your heart.
