Chronic alcoholism associated with brain injury

Motor function impaired by long term alcohol use

Researchers from Vanderbilt University have discovered a direct correlation with chronic alcohol abuse and decreased functioning of the frontal lobe of the brain.

The frontal lobe of the human brain is generally thought to be the emotional control center and the center of the personality. It is responsible for motor function and problem solving, along with language and memory functions.

The study shows that even after an alcoholic stops drinking, motor function is reduced. In addition, the study suggests that many recovering alcoholics may have to work harder to accomplish the same tasks as their non-alcohol dependent counterparts.

“While this study may seem discouraging for struggling alcoholics, it really should be encouraging,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “It’s true that some individuals who abuse alcohol have a more difficult time carrying out tasks than others do, but the sooner one gets into recovery, the less likely that significant brain injury will occur.”
