Mexican soldiers patrolling in the border city of Tijuana last Friday found $15.3 million in cash inside a parked car. The cash was seized along with jewelry, four weapons and three kilos of cocaine. Authorities say the money belonged to Sinaloa cartel leader Joaquin Guzman Loera, aka “El Chapo.”
No arrests have been made in connection with Friday’s discovery. The vehicle, which was parked in the Cumbres de Juarez neighborhood, was believed to be heading to a residence that cartel members use as a base for financial operations.
This is the second largest confiscation of cash since President Felipe Calderon took office in 2006. The largest seizure was made in 2008 when soldiers found $26 million in Sinaloa.
