Mexican man sentenced to 13 years in fatal DWI

A man who pleaded guilty of DUI manslaughter was sentenced to 13 years in jail on Tuesday. Daniel Garcia, 28, was arrested after the accident, which occurred in November of 2010 and caused the death of Pamila Yoder, 51.

At the time of the accident police discovered that his blood alcohol content was over twice the legal limit. He was driving south on U.S 31 near University Drive when he  ran a red light and crashed into Yoder’s car, who died on the scene. Two other passengers in her car were seriously injured. Her children drove by the scene unaware that their mother was involved in the collision.

Garcia was also seriously injured in the accident and was taken to the hospital. He later escaped from the hospital and ran from the law. He was on the run for 5 months until a tenacious police officer caught up with him in Gainesville. During the investigation, they he discovered that he was an illegal immigrant. A Sarasota DUI attorney would likely advise a client against running from the law, which would just make matters worse.

Garcia will be deported after he finishes his 13 year sentence.

A DWI is a serious charge whether or not it results in injury or death to another driver so it’s critical that the accused retain a Sarasota DUI attorney. When a person facing an intoxicated driving charge hires a Sarasota DUI lawyer they may be able to have their charges reduced and minimize the penalties they face.
