An experienced helicopter pilot helping in the installation of a seven-story Christmas tree near the Te Wero Island Bridge in Auckland, New Zealand on Wednesday miraculously survived a crash that left the helicopter severely mangled.
A video of the crash shows the helicopter began jerking wildly after its rotors hit cables attached to scaffolding. The chopper plunged to the ground and appeared to be snapped in half. People on the ground rushed to pull pilot Greg Gribble out of the wreckage. Gribble was able to walk away from the scene with the help of two men. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated for minor injuries. Gribble told reporters he is “doing fine.”
“He's very, very lucky, God was on his side there. I feel sick inside, I need to come to terms with what's gone on today,'' Gribble’s wife Elaine told Auckland Now.
The crash is under investigation by the Civil Aviation Authority.
