North Korean Ship Tracked by U.S. Navy Abandons Destination, Turns Around

Acting in accordance with the recent UN Security Council resolution that placed tighter restrictions on North Korea a United States Navy vessel began tracking a ship that had departed from the communist country after it fell under suspicion of transporting weapons. It was believed the Kang Nam 1 ship had been attempting to reach Burma but opted to turn around after being tracked by the U.S. vessel.

As part of UN Resolution 1874 any North Korean ship suspected of transporting weapons could be boarded and searched and it is believed the U.S. was prepared to do just that before the ship turned around.

The ship was being followed shortly after departing North Korea on June 17. It managed to sail along the coast of China but rather than continue towards its destination it returned north. Burma has denied having any connection with the North Korean ship.

Tougher restrictions against North Korea were imposed following the country’s decision to continue nuclear and ballistic missile tests in defiance of a previous UN order.
