Organization of American States Orders Interim Government of Honduras to Restore President Manuel Zelaya

Just days after a military coup overthrew Honduran President Manuel Zelaya and forced him from the country the Organization of American States has ordered the interim government to restore the leader to power or face suspension.

Zelaya had been heavily criticized by the Honduran Congress as well as the Supreme Court and military after attempting to initiate a referendum that would have called for a vote to extend his time in office. He had taken office in 2006 as part of a non-renewable four-year term yet had been looking to change the country’s constitution as a means of keeping power.

His refusal to adhere to Supreme Court rulings resulted in the legal body’s decision to order his expulsion and on Sunday the army stormed his residence and kidnapped him. Despite his removal Zelaya pledged to return but the leader of the interim government has already stated he would be arrested if he were to return.

The interim government has received little support from international leaders who have all denounced the military coup and now the OAS has threatened to suspend Honduras if it does not restore Zelaya within three days.
