Anders Behring Breivik, the Norwegian man accused of murdering 77 people in two separate attacks in July, has been declared insane by psychiatrists. Medical experts came to the conclusion that Breivik is schizophrenic after conducting 13 interviews with him, authorities announced Monday. They said Breivik appears to live in a “delusional universe where all his thoughts and acts are guided by his delusions.”
The psychiatrists’ findings will be reviewed by the Norwegian Board of Forensic Medicine. "If the final conclusion is that Breivik is insane, we will request that the court in the upcoming legal proceedings pass sentence by which Breivik is subjected to compulsory mental health care," prosecutor Inga Bejer Engh told reporters.
Breivik was arrested on July 22 after detonating a car bomb at government offices in Oslo and going on a shooting rampage at a youth camp on Utoya Island. Eight people were killed by the car bomb and sixty-nine people, mostly teens, died at the youth camp. Despite confessing to both attacks, Breivik pleaded not guilty to all charges. He claims the mass murder was necessary to defend Europe against Muslims. Breivik’s trial is set to begin on April 16.
