Alexis Arguello was found dead in his home Managua,
Nicaragua home early Wednesday morning. The former boxing champ, who is
considered one of the best junior lightweights ever, was reportedly found with
a gunshot wound to the chest.
Presidentail spokesman Rosario Murillo confirmed Arguello’s
death but did not provide any more details. An autopsy is pending. “We are
upset. This is a heartbreaking announcement. He was the champion of the poor,
an example of forgiveness and reconciliation,” Murillo said.
Arguello, 57, was elected mayor of Managua last year. He retired
from boxing in 1995 with a record of 82-2 with 65 knockouts. He was nicknamed
The Explosive Thin Man and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of
Fame in 1992.
