What is “crack”?
Crack refers to a form of cocaine that comes in freebase or “rock” form and is normally ingested by heating it up and smoking the substance to get high. In its purest form, it looks like jagged-edged, small off-white nuggets. It has a slightly higher density than what you would find with candle wax but the purer forms are brittle like a hard plastic and crystalline in appearance. It is listed as one of the DEA’s primary drug threats in the US today and is a powerfully addictive substance and there are numerous crack drug rehab programs treating this issue today.
Physiological and psychological effects
The smoking of crack cocaine produces numerous physiological and psychological because of how it affects the balance of chemistry in the brain. The following is a breakdown of the possible physiological and psychological side effects that the user commonly experiences:
Physiological effects – constricted blood vessels, increased blood pressure and heart rate, increased body temperature, and pupil dilation. Ingested in larger amounts, crack cocaine can produce bizarre and erratic behavior which occasionally turns violent. Additionally, you can experience toxic reactions that closely resemble those experienced with amphetamine poisoning. These include muscle twitches, paranoia, tremors, and vertigo.
Psychological effects – the initial effect of smoking crack is the release of large amounts of a brain chemical called dopamine which induces a euphoric state for the user. In addition to this euphoria, other side effects could include alertness, a craving for more cocaine, increased energy, insomnia, potential paranoia, and supreme confidence. Typically, the high lasts between 5 and 10 minutes at which time those dopamine levels decrease rapidly. The result is that the user slips into a depressed state.
