Mindy McCready shared some happy news Wednesday amid reports she and her 5-year-old son Zander had been reported missing. The country singer told People magazine she is 5 months pregnant with twins. McCready identified the twins’ father as a music producer named David.
The announcement came after McCready denied reports she kidnapped Zander from her father’s Cape Coral home. The singer lost custody of Zander in 2007 amid multiple suicide attempts, her battle with addiction and a stint in jail. McCready’s mother, Gayle Inge, was awarded custody of Zander. According to the Florida Department of Children and Families, McCready and Zander were reported missing after they left McCready’s father’s home last Tuesday and failed to return. McCready has been given until Thursday afternoon to return Zander to her mother.
In an e-mail to Access Hollywood, McCready said she did not “steal” Zander. “I am working with lawyers to try to get all this straightened out,” she said. “I did not steal my child, as it would be impossible for me to kidnap what already belongs to me! There never was any missing persons report and never an Amber Alert.”
McCready told the Associated Press that she thought it was okay to take Zander to Tennessee because the custody battle was being transferred to a Tennessee court. She also claims her mother was abusive to Zander. "I'm a mom first," she said. “No matter what happens, I'm going to protect my kid. If I have to go to jail, so be it."
