Ecstasy can be dangerous don't hesitate to get help now Better early than too late

MDMA, more commonly known as “ecstasy” is a very dangerous psychoactive substance often used and abused by teens and young adults. Ecstasy is most commonly found in dance clubs or large parties known as “Raves”.  There are also several other segments of the population which have been reported to have used the drug more than one time in the past month placing them in the category of drug abusers.  Recently, an alarming study was published indicating that the number of 8th – 12th graders who perceive the drug as dangerous is falling. This indicates that both parents and the school system are falling behind on educating these children and young adults on the dangers of drug abuse.

In another recently published survey, an estimated 503,000 people ages 12 and older had reported using ecstasy in the month prior to the survey.  Further more an estimated 12.4 million had used the drug in the previous year.  Theses studies all indicate that there needs to be more education on the potential dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.  This problem if left alone will compound in to several more people becoming addicted to drugs and other substance, subsequently requiring some form of intervention or substance abuse treatment.

Ecstasy (MDMA) primarily affects the brain and the receptors which use the chemical serotonin to communicate with other areas of the brain. This particular system in the brain is responsible for regulating functions such as mood, aggression, sensitivity to pain and can also cause sleep disturbances. Ecstasy also causes the brain to release excessive amounts of serotonin which can lead to chronic depression in long term users of the drug.  Every time the serotonin levels are artificially raised to the levels caused by ecstasy, the brain becomes desensitized to the vital chemical causing the brain to need more in order to function properly.

MDMA is a highly addictive substance. A survey of young adult MDMA users indicated that 43% of who used ecstasy met the criteria for a diagnosis of dependence.
