Jay Peak Resort's Huge Expansion Opened its Doors - and its Roof
Jay Peak Resort will change the face of Vermont tourism. With the exciting grand opening of their expanded facility just a couple weeks ago, the area is now something much more than a winter playground. It’s now a year-round luxury destination with beautiful accommodations, an array of all-season activities, and the massive Pump House indoor water park, an incredible 40,000 square foot facility with a stunning OpenAire retractable roof enclosure.
The Jay Peak expansion has been huge; the water park alone represents a $20 million investment. Designed, manufactured and installed by OpenAire, the enclosure measures 140 feet (42.67m) by 280 feet (85.34m) and rises 43 feet (13.10m) high at the sidewalls. The impressive structure accommodates double FlowRider surf wave, water basketball, a kids' area, lazy river, and includes a curved cupola that fits the 55’ (16.76m) Aqualoop slide tower.
When the weather is warm and sunny, the roof opens easily to let in the sun and the fresh air, and give users an unbeatable outdoor experience. And when it’s raining or too cold to swim outside, it slides closed at the touch of a button, but still lets in plenty of natural light through the glass panels.
The glass enclosure is airy and dramatic, offering a stunning space to swim, relax and play. But more than that, it’s highly functional. For example, the structure can handle a remarkable 80 lbs. per square foot of snow load, which is a vital for a resort in an area that gets more snowfall than some places in the Rockies. It also boasts a number of eco-friendly features that reduce the resort’s carbon footprint. In summer, humidity can be exhausted naturally through the open roof, reducing the need for air conditioning and dehumidification. Plus, the glass enclosure offers a space with plenty of sunlight, providing an appealing alternative to artificial light.
“The retractable roof has added tremendous usability and appeal to the overall facility,” says Mark Albertine, OpenAire president. “It creates an enclosed indoor resort that’s the perfect complement to a ski vacation – and a great place to play all year round. The park and the rest of the expansion are going to make a huge difference to off-season tourism in the area.”
OpenAire specializes in creating retractable enclosures that draw attention – and crowds. They have recently started construction on another landmark project, the Aquatoria in Donetsk, Ukraine. Slated to become the largest retractable aluminum-domed indoor waterpark in the world, it is being built as part of the preparations for Euro 2012, the 14th annual European football championships.
