Facebook to Simplify Privacy Settings, Broaden User Information

Facebook, the popular social networking site, will be making significant changes to their privacy settings over the next couple of weeks, according to reports Wednesday.

The site wants to simplify its applications in order for users to have better control over who can view aspects of their pages.

The company said Wednesday that the new settings will give people greater control over what photos, updates and personal details they share with their friends, family and strangers on Facebook and, eventually, the wider Internet.

To make the settings easier, Facebook is consolidating its existing six privacy pages and more than 30 settings on to a single privacy page, according to Associated Press. It will also standardize the options for each setting so the choices are always the same, which hasn't always been the case.

Facebook wants to broaden the scope of its site to be geared towards Google and Yahoo, as opposed to Twitter and MySpace. The site wants its content to be expanded outside of just their users’ friends and family.

The site will let users assign different privacy settings to each piece of information they make available on Facebook. This includes photos, contact information and work info, as well as status updates and links.

Facebook is also getting rid of its regional networks, which the site believes added confusion over which information will be seen by the masses or will be kept private. In the past, someone who joined a Georgia network, for example, could inadvertently make personal information available to everyone else in that network, including complete strangers.
