What is Detox In Drug Rehab?

What do we mean by detox?

Detox is the shortened form of the word detoxification which refers to the process in which toxins are removed from the body.  It is typically medicinal or physiological in nature and is not limited to the human body.  The intent is to return an organism to homeostasis after the prolonged use of an addictive substance.  Where conventional medicine is concerned, detox is usually achieved decontaminating the person when they have ingested a toxic substance and by using medicinal antidotes and other techniques such as dialysis.

Drug detox is a process employed by addiction treatment and recovery centers and involves a collective of interventions in order to control drug intoxication and withdrawal symptoms.  It refers to the process of purging an individual from an addictive substance that they are under the influence of.  It also targets decreasing those physical effects that characterize the mechanism of addiction.  However, detox does not typically address other aspects of addiction such as behavioral issues, psychological aspects, and societal factors.

About the detox drug rehab process

With few exceptions, detox drug rehab becomes a necessary part of the addiction treatment and recovery process based on the duration and severity of the individual’s addiction.  In some cases, prescription medications are administered in order to lessen the withdrawal symptoms that typically occur when a person ceases their use of an addictive substance.  There are normally three steps involved in the process as follows:

  1. Evaluation – involves determining the addictive substance present in the individual’s body as well as an evaluation of the person in order to determine if there are any co-existing disorders present.
  2. Stabilization – the individual is guided through the detox process in this stage and can be accomplished with or without the administration of prescription medicines although it is more common for medicines to be used in the process.
  3. Guidance through treatment – readying the individual for the recovery stage is the last stage of the detox drug rehab process.  Once again, the psychological aspects of drug addiction are not addressed during this stage.

For the addicted individual, this is the most difficult stage of the addiction treatment and recovery process because it can be extremely painful when you are trying to eliminate a person’s physical and psychological dependency on an addictive substance.
