Dev Anand, a legendary Bollywood actor often compared to Hollywood’s Gregory Peck, had died. Anand passed away of a heart attack Sunday in London. He was 88.
Anand made his silver screen debut in 1946’s Hum Ek Hain. He went on to appear in more than 110 films, including seven with one-time love Suraiya. Although Anand proposed to Suraiya, the pair never married because the actress’s grandmother opposed the relationship. Anand and Suraiya’s last film together was Do Sitare in 1951. Anand later expanded into writing, directing and acting. His career spanned more than 65 years. Anand's final film was 2011’s Chargesheet.
Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh called Anand a “great artist.” "Dev Anand was a great artist who entertained generations of cinema lovers over five decades. He was an embodiment of long passion for acting and filmmaking. I join millions of his fans in mourning his death,” Singh said in a statement.
