The interim government in Honduras has rejected a deadline imposed by the Organization of American States to reinstate President Manuel Zelaya, declaring there was no room for negotiation and if the overthrown leader returns to the country he will be arrested for treason.
Zelaya was kidnapped from his presidential residence by the army and flown out of the country early Sunday morning in what has been called “an old-fashion coup” by OAS leader Jose Miguel Insulza. On Wednesday the OAS placed a three-day deadline on the interim government to put Zelaya back in power but those demands have been rejected.
Newly sworn in interim president Roberto Micheletti addressed the prospect of Zelaya returning to the country saying, “He can no longer return to the presidency of the republic unless a president from another Latin American country comes and imposes him using guns.”
Zelaya had planned on returning to Honduras on Thursday but has since state he would wait until the 72-hour deadline imposed by the OAS expired. While several international leaders have condemned the coup many in Honduras oppose the idea of Zelaya returning.
The controversial leader ran into serious problems after he began to take steps to change the country’s constitution in order to extend his presidential term. He had been elected in 2006 for a non-renewable four-year term yet he had arranged for a referendum to vote on the prospect of extending his presidency. On the day the referendum was to be held the army stormed his residence and kidnapped him and then flew the leader to Costa Rica.
