Croatia’s Prime Minister Ivo Sanader has announced his plans to step down from office and further stated he has no intentions of entering the presidential race scheduled for next year.
Sanader had been prime minister since 2003 and was considered a legitimate candidate for the country’s presidency but that came to a halt on Wednesday when he declared “I have decided to withdraw from active politics and not to run for the presidency.”
The 56-year-old leader of the Croatian Democratic Union went on to state “My job has been done, my political life ends now.” Sanader had achieved his main goal of gaining Croatian membership in NATO and the country is close to membership in the European Union.
Sanader recommended his deputy, Jadranka Kosor, as his replacement.
