The United States army has launched a major offensive against Taliban militants in the southern Afghanistan province of Helmand, the first such operation under President Barack Obama.
In what is being described as the largest marine offensive since Vietnam nearly 4,000 marines coupled with 650 Afghan troops pushed in to the Helmand river valley with NATO planes providing air cover during the operation.
While the early hours of the operation did not produce any enemy contact that is expected to change as Helmand is considered a Taliban stronghold. It is believed the initial stage of the operation will be highly aggressive and could last up to 36 hours.
Helmand Governor Gulab Mangal has expressed optimism about the operation saying, “The security forces will build bases to provide security for the local people so that they can carry out every activity with this favorable background, and take their lives forward in peace.”
Mangal’s optimism was reinforced by U.S. Brigadier General Larry Nicholson who assured “Where we go we will stay, and where we stay, we will hold, build and work toward transition of all security responsibilities to Afghan forces.”
