National Independence Day Fireworks Celebration Takes Place July 4th in DC

The National Independence Day Celebration fireworks display will take place on July 4th at 9:10pm in Washington, DC.

The fireworks display is one of the nation’s most renowned as it commemorates the 233rd anniversary of Independence Day. Due to the display being in the nation’s capital, it is one of Washington, DC’s best tourist attractions.

The fireworks display will begin between 9:10 and 9:27pm on the National Mall between the U.S. Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial. Onlookers are able to sit around the Washington Monument and view the display over the Reflecting Pool.

The show pays tribute to Abraham Lincoln and to astronauts and their support teams at NASA. The "Battle Hymn of the Republic" will play with a special sequence of blue and gray shells to celebrate the bicentennial of Lincoln's birth. This year also marks the 40th anniversary of the first landing on the Moon. A fireworks display choreographed to the theme from "2001: A Space Odyssey" will accompany a sound bite from astronaut Neil Armstrong.

Prior to the fireworks, the National Park Service will host their Independence Day concert at 6 p.m. The concert will take place on the southwest corner of the Washington Monument Grounds, near the intersection of 17th Street and Independence Avenue SW.

Metro service will run from 7 am until 3 am. The rain date for the fireworks display is July 5.

The annual A Capitol Fourth in Washington concert will also take place on July 4th and will be hosted by actor Jimmy Smits. The Capitol grounds open at 3 pm; while the musical performances begin at 8 pm. Concert attendees can view the fireworks on the Mall beginning at 9:10 pm.

This 90-minute concert is broadcast live nationally on PBS and NPR stations. Barry Manilow opens and closes the broadcast with a medley of hits and patriotic classics, accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra and the Choral Arts Society of Washington. Aretha Franklin, Michael Feinstein, the cast of "Jersey Boys" and Natasha Bedingfield will also perform.

For the children, special guests Elmo, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Oscar the Grouch and more of the "Sesame Street" gang will be in attendance.
