CTA Construction Wins Excellence Awards for Green Building
CTA Construction Co. Inc. has won three Excellence in Construction Awards for projects built using both environmentally friendly and energy-efficient methods. A general contractor based in Waltham, Mass., CTA Construction has extensive experience in meeting state and national standards for green building.
“At CTA, we are proud of our record for delivering high-quality projects that meet the latest environmental standards, which is something our clients increasingly request. Green building is about more than the features of the end product. It’s also about minimizing the environmental impact of the methods and techniques used to construct the facility,” said Patrick Tompkins, Principal of CTA Construction Co. Inc.
CTA was one of 16 firms recognized by the Associated Builders and Contractors Massachusetts Chapter, the state’s largest construction trade association. ABC’s independent panel of judges based their decisions on execution of design, craftsmanship, attention to detail, safety and other considerations.
“CTA’s work represents the state-of-the-art in construction,” said Massachusetts ABC President Greg Beeman. “The company should be justifiably proud of this achievement. Work of this caliber is helping to raise the standards of excellence throughout the construction industry.”
The awards, presented by the Associated Builders and Contractors Massachusetts Chapter were:
The Building Green Award for the UMass-Amherst Police Headquarters, built to meet LEED Gold, one of the highest rankings available from the U.S. Green Building Council. CTA adhered to standards in materials selection and work-site best practices to meet the environmental and energy efficiency standards called for in the design by architect Caolo & Bieniek Associates Inc.
The Building Green Award for the East Elementary School in Hingham. The school’s design, by Ai3 Architecture Involution LLC, included many green elements, including maximizing natural lighting, solar wall heating, utilizing recycled rainwater and reducing solar heat transfer with a white roof, sun shades and insulated fiberglass windows. The project was built under the Massachusetts Collaborative for High Performance Schools, a certification process that addresses school design, construction and operation. MA-CHPS strives to make schools environmentally friendly and efficient energy, water and material efficient, well-lit, thermally comfortable, acoustically sound, safe, healthy and easy to operate.
The Merit Award in the category of Public Works/Environment for the Town of Weston Department of Public Works facility. The complex project, designed by Weston & Samspon Engineering, Inc., involved construction of two new buildings: a vehicle equipment operations garage and an operations building. The vehicle wash bay includes a waste water collection and recycling system.
In 2010, CTA won the Public Works Project of the Year from the American Public Works Association and an ABC Eagle Award for the Lexington Department of Public Works, and ABC also awarded CTA Merit Awards for the Massport State Police Headquarters and the Capen Court Senior Housing in Somerville.
In the past 10 years, CTA has completed more than $400 million worth of public construction projects, including schools, libraries and public works facilities.
