Snake Kills Baby as She Sleeps

A pet Burmese Python killed a 2-year-old Florida girl Wednesday. Shaiunna Hare was strangled by the nearly 9-foot albino snake after it escaped it’s enclosure during the night and got in to her crib.

Oxford Police say the python wrapped itself around the toddler as she slept, bit her several times and squeezed her to death. She was found dead Thursday morning by her mother’s boyfriend, Charles Darnell. Darnell repeatedly stabbed the snake to free Shaiunna. He then called 911 sobbing, “The baby’s dead. Our stupid snake got out in the middle of the night and strangled the baby.”

Authorities obtained a search warrant and confiscated the python, which weighed about 15 to 20 pounds, and a 6-foot red-tail boa constrictor. The python was taken to a veterinarian for treatment of the stab wounds.

Darnell, 32, and Shaiunna’s mother, 19-year-old Jaren Hare, were questioned by investigators but weren’t taken in to custody. The couple may face negligence charges.

Darnell will face a second-degree misdemeanor charge of failing to obtain a state permit for the snake, which is considered a “reptile of concern.” The charge is punishable with jail time.
