Pakistani officials confirm a convoy of tankers carrying fuel for NATO forces stationed in Afghanistan was destroyed over the weekend in Balochistan province. According to police official Abdul Qadir, armed militants on motorcycles forced eight tankers to stop about 55 miles southwest of Quetta Sunday night. The militants shot and killed one of the drivers before setting fire to all of the tankers. No one else was wounded or killed.
The attack is the second of its kind in less than one week. Last Thursday, at least 7 militants on motorcycles launched an attack on oil tankers stranded at a terminal outside of Quetta. The attackers destroyed 22 tankers with rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons. No one was wounded or killed.
The tankers had been stranded at the terminal since Pakistani officials closed two NATO supply routes through Pakistan to Afghanistan following a November 26 NATO airstrike that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers. NATO called the attack a “tragic unintended” incident.
