15 Al Qaeda Militants Escape Yemeni Prison Through Tunnel

At least 15 al Qaeda militants tunneled their way out of a prison in the Yemeni port city of Aden early Monday morning, security officials say. The men dug a 130 foot tunnel from the western side of Central Security prison to a nearby petrol station and escaped the area without incident.

Soon after the escape, security officials launched a widespread manhunt. Main roads were shutdown and security checkpoints were set up across the city. So far, none of the escapees have been apprehended.

Sources say the majority of the escapees had been convicted of bank robbery and attacks on Yemeni security officials. This is the second time this year al Qaeda inmates have tunneled out of a prison in Yemen. In June, nearly 60 militants escaped from a prison in Mukalla using the same method.
