Treatment for Substance Abuse, And Why You Need It

The DEA publishes their annual report on the main substance abuse threats in the US. According to the latest report, the primary substance threats are:

  • Prescription medications especially opioid-based painkillers
  • MDMA’s (club or date rape drugs – Ecstasy, GHB, etc.)
  • marijuana
  • heroin
  • cocaine (crack or powder)
  • amphetamines and methamphetamines

In addition to the DEA’s annual report, there are a number of different addiction specialists, health organizations, and medical professionals who feel that the abuse of, addiction to, or dependency on any of these substances are serious public health threats as well. There are roughly 40 million annually reported cases of death due to overdose and serious illnesses that are substance abuse-related. As a result of this, treatment for substance abuse programs exists throughout the US at the different rehab facilities that are available.

Treatment for substance abuse differs from one rehab facility to the next

You have two basic types of facilities. There is the alternative or residential format and the traditional type and there are significant differences between them. First and foremost, the in-patient programs at the alternative treatment for substance abuse center are more effective and exhibit higher success rates where total recovery is concerned. While the alternative facilities have a 70% or higher success rate, the traditional facilities fail nearly 80% of the time. That means that 4 out of every 5 of their clients eventually relapse.

The reason for this is that the alternative treatment for substance abuse programs employs a variety of innovative therapies and recovery tools, unlike the traditional facility that takes a generalized or one-size-fits-all approach to substance abuse rehab. You cannot treat two individuals in the same fashion because every substance abuse issue is not identical. Nor is the way in which an individual going to react and respond to the treatment that is given. At best, the traditional facilities rely on conventional out-of-date therapies that are ineffective.
