What is psilocybin?
One of the more popular hallucinogens of the 1960’s and 1970’s was Psilocybin, the active ingredient of which is found in a variety of different mushrooms. Today, Psilocybin is more commonly referred to as “shrooms” which is the common terminology used on the street. Once ingested, the drug quickly metabolizes and targets the brain’s serotonin receptors. Hallucinations and other mind-altering characteristics are the result. These can last from between 3 to 8 hours depending on how much of the drug has been ingested.
Is psilocybin addictive?
Psilocybin is not considered as being an addictive substance by most medical professionals since it doesn’t display the characteristics of a substance with a high potential for addiction. What could be considered as addictive behavior happens in rare cases, but there has been the occasionally reported case of habitual abuse and like behavior. Since a tolerance build-up can occur, some individuals will then decide to enter a Psilocybin substance abuse treatment program so that this tolerance does not progress into something more serious.
As the tolerance continues to build, the effects of the drug do not last as long. So the individual may start ingesting larger doses with more frequency in order to achieve the desired effect or high. Conversely, this tolerance build-up causes many people to discontinue using Psilocybin. Because of this, many health professionals and medical experts feel that the drug is nothing more than a recreational psychedelic drug that does not typically lead to dependency.
Effects of Psilocybin
The effects that a person experiences when under the influence of Psilocybin are not unlike those experienced with other hallucinogenic substances. These effects will vary from one person to the next and are extremely subjective. As was mentioned above, the effects last no more than 8 hours on average depending on dosage, method of preparation, and personal metabolism. However, since Psilocybin has the ability to alter one’s perception of time, these effects may appear to last longer.
