The substance abuse issue in the US

Every year, the DEA releases their most current report regarding the primary drug threats in the US. In the latest report, the following substances were listed as the primary threats:

  • cocaine (both crack and powder form)
  • heroin
  • marijuana
  • MDMA’s (a.k.a. club or date rape drugs such as Ecstasy)
  • methamphetamine
  • prescription medications (including hypnotics/sedatives, opiates, and stimulants)

In addition to being the most recent focus of the DEA, they are also a critical concern to health organizations and medical professionals who view them as serious public health threats. This is based on the fact that there are now roughly 40 million reported cases of death due to overdose and serious illnesses that are associated with substance abuse.

The impact of substance abuse

Many individuals justify their abuse of alcohol and/or drugs by saying that they are only harming themselves. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Alcohol and drug addiction not only harms the individual, it tears families and all types of relationships apart as well. In addition to this, there are financial, legal, and societal consequences that may have to be dealt with. Suffice it to say, substance abuse impacts many aspects of a person’s life. There is never a positive outcome if substance abuse continues.

When an addicted individual finally does come to grips with their substance abuse and admits that they do have a problem, this is the first step in the right direction and getting help so they overcome their substance addiction. The next step is equally challenging, namely choosing the right avenue for substance abuse help and choosing a facility that will best target their personal needs. Help for substance abuse and dependency is offered in a number of different ways, which is oftentimes what makes the decision so difficult.

Over the past few decades, numerous addiction treatment and recovery centers have been opening their doors and helping addicted individuals who need substance abuse help. As these facilities and the field of addiction rehab have evolved, we have seen the onset of newer and more innovative concepts and therapies that are now being employed. As a result, there are hundreds of facilities available throughout the US which complicates the decision making for the individual.
