Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has called on U.S. President Barack Obama to scrap the planned missile defense shield in Europe, having been quoted by Interfax news agency as stating, “If we see our American partners refrain from deploying new missile complexes, anti-missile defense systems, or for example review their approach to widening military-political blocs... this would be a big movement forward.”
That movement forward is something Obama has expressed optimism about, saying he felt the two countries were developing a “very good relationship.” It could develop further next week as Obama is scheduled to meet with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to discuss the reduction of nuclear stockpiles as well as the current situations in Iran and North Korea.
Obama will be in Moscow between July 6 and 8 to talk with Medvedev but some are saying that it is Putin who will be dictating Russia’s agenda in the summit. Putin has long opposed the idea of the U.S. military setting up a missile defense shield near their borders and has, in the past, threatened to attack such installations, calling them a threat to Russia’s national security.
While Medevdev is the country’s leader it is Putin, a former president himself, that still wields a large majority of power when it comes to foreign affairs.
