Type 2 Diabetes Market Rising obesity and aging populations are driving diabetes trends

Epidemiology: Type 2 Diabetes

The number of diagnosed prevalent cases of type 2 diabetes will increase across all seven major markets from approximately 39.4 million in 2010 to 52.5 million in 2020.

In 2010, the report estimates that there were approximately 16 million people in the US diagnosed with diabetes. In Japan, there were approximately 7.8 million prevalent diabetes cases.

In the five major EU markets (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK), there were about 15.6 million people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2010.

Despite advancements in medical technology, diabetes prevalence is on the increase, driven by rises in obesity. Across the seven major markets, population aging also accounts for a large proportion of diabetes mellitus patients. The rise in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes will be most substantial in those aged 60 and over, mirroring the rapid growth in this age group in all seven major markets.
