What is Adderall?

Adderall is a trademarked brand name for a compound medication and is classified as a psychostimulant. It is available as Adderall XR (extended release) and Adderall IR (instant release) and is prescribed for the treatment of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). However, it is also prescribed to treat narcolepsy, a chronic sleep disorder. It functions by increasing the amount of dopamine that the brain releases which in turn increases one’s alertness and their ability to concentrate.

Adderall XR does treat both disorders, but is more commonly prescribed to treat ADHD. Unfortunately, it is very popular with recreational drug users and the DEA considers it to be a primary drug threat in the US along with other prescription medications. Dependencies on the drug are not uncommon as tolerances build up quickly.
