The East Shore Expressway was closed Thursday afternoon when a large truck collided with a bridge, seriously injuring the driver.
The state Department of Transportation said a truck from Mega Transportation was traveling from Barrington to Providence. Once the truck, which has a hydraulic bed, began to go under the Route 103 Bridge, the bed of the truck disengaged, lifting it into the air. The rear of the truck got wedged in the overpass and impaled a bridge girder. The truck came to a stop 300 feet from the bridge.
The driver of the truck was seriously injured but they are not life-threatening. Another car, not involved in the accident, on the opposite side of the expressway was damaged.
It is unclear the collision was caused by operator error or equipment malfunction.
The bridge sustained some damage and it took workers hours to remove metal debris for the overpass.
