North Korea continued to push the limits of international patience on Saturday after defying a United Nations order banning the practice of test firing missiles. According to officials at least seven ballistic missiles were fired from a launch site along the country’s east coast, all landing in the Sea of Japan.
The North test fired four missiles on Thursday but the missiles on Saturday drew greater concern due to their long-range capabilities believed to be about 312 miles.
South Korea reacted strongly to Saturday’s events calling them an “act of provocation” but assured its citizens “Our military is fully ready to counter any North Korean threats and provocations.” Both South Korea and Japan condemned the latest tests, accusing the North of being in direct violation of a recently passed UN Security Council resolution that banned the practice.
That resolution also allowed for the inspection of land, sea and air shipments in and out of the country in an effort to halt the purchase and sale of weapons by the North. That news was sharply criticized by Pyongyang which has said any attempt to stop one of their ships would be treated as an act of war and retaliation would follow.
