Officials in the Philippines say the death toll from Tropical Storm Washi has risen from 927 to over 1,000. According to the head of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, the official death toll stood at 1,002 on Wednesday. The toll is expected to rise as search teams continue to look for hundreds of people who remain missing.
Washi struck the island of Mindanao over the weekend, bringing heavy rain that caused flash floods and landslides. Authorities say entire villages were wiped out by flooding. At least 88,000 people fled their homes and sought shelter at evacuation centers. Thousands of others remain without electricity, clean water and food. In all, more than 167,000 people were affected by the storm.
The hardest hit areas include the port cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro. Officials said Monday most of the dead were found in those cities.
