Interim Government in Honduras Vows to Block Ousted President Manuel Zelaya’s Return

The interim government in Honduras has vowed to block any attempt by ousted President Manuel Zelaya to return to the country, declaring his plane would not be allowed to land.

Zelaya, who was kidnapped by army troops and removed from the country last week, has promised to return to Honduras later on Sunday despite threats of arrest by the interim government. Zelaya’s ousting was greeted with strong criticism from several international leaders including Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez and the United States President Barack Obama.

On Saturday the Organization of American States made good on a promise to suspend Honduras from the body for failing to reinstate Zelaya. Prior to the OAS’s decision to suspend Honduras interim president Roberto Micheletti stated, “The OAS is a political organization, not a court, and it can't judge us.”

Despite the calls for his reinstatement the interim government of Honduras has refused to bend, claiming Zelaya had been attempting to change the country’s constitution as a means of extending his time in office. In 2006 Zelaya was elected to a non-renewable four year term but had recently proposed a referendum that would have addressed the prospect of changing the country’s constitution. That referendum was to occur on June 28 but he was kidnapped early that morning and flown to Costa Rica, thus halting any vote.
