Roger Federer stands alone atop the men’s Grand Slam singles title leader board after knocking off Andy Roddick in an epic five-set battle 5-7, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 16-14 on Sunday for his 15th career grand Slam championship and his sixth Wimbledon title.
Federer managed to break Roddick’s serve just once but that one time came at 15-14 in the fifth set, giving him the win in just over four hours. The Swiss star set a personal best with 50 aces in the match while collecting 107 winners.
Federer, with the win on Sunday, snapped his tie with Pete Sampras for most career singles victories in men’s Grand Slam tennis. He recently captured his first title at the French Open, marking a career Grand Slam for Federer as he has won Wimbledon six times, the U.S. Open five times and the Australian Open three times.
